Teaching
Current appointment
Yonsei University, Mirae Campus
Assistant Professor of Digital Media Design
Teaching the principles and methods that bring artistic ideas into practice.
As a media artist, researcher, and educator, Jinwoong Kim explores the principles and production methods that shape image, sound, and movement. His teaching spans creative coding, sound synthesis, real-time 3D, physical computing, and machine learning, guiding the development of artistic ideas into working systems.
Learning progresses from foundational concepts through experimentation and prototyping to the planning, production, and presentation of individual projects. The emphasis is on helping learners choose technologies suited to their expressive intentions and develop the ability to advance their own work.
Courses
-
Computational Thinking for Digital Creators Course code: GED3220
Introduces computational thinking as a way to understand the structures behind digital creation. Pattern recognition, algorithm design, and foundational mathematics and physics connect to creative methods for graphics, movement, sound, and interaction.
-
Computational Design and Creative Coding Course code: GED3204
Explores creative programming as a way to turn algorithms into images and movement. Using p5.js, rules of repetition, transformation, and chance become the basis for generative graphics and interactive visual expression.
-
Understanding Sound Design Course code: GED3173
Approaches recorded sound as a material for creative work. Recording, editing, mixing, and mastering form a connected production process for shaping sound and composing listening experiences for digital media.
-
Digital Audio Synthesis and Design Course code: GED3202
Uses digital synthesis to create new timbres and shape how sound changes over time. Experiments with synthesizer principles, modulation, and audio effects inform sound production for film, games, and interactive media.
-
Fundamentals of Game Design Course code: GED3138
Introduces the design of game rules and play experiences through code and visual elements. JavaScript and p5.js bring graphics, collision detection, user input, and sound together in the creation of 2D games.
-
Fundamentals of Game Engine Content Development Course code: GED3201
Uses game engines to create virtual environments and interactive content. Materials, lighting, and sound establish the environment, while visual scripting connects user input to the behavior of a responsive system.
-
3D Game Design Course code: GED3218
Explores 3D game creation in Unreal Engine, from initial planning to implementation. Environments, characters, and level design combine with interaction and audiovisual effects to produce a playable game demo.
-
Advanced Game Engine-based Content Development Course code: GED3227
Explores real-time 3D environments as a setting for advanced moving-image production. Space, lighting, camera work, and editing are composed in Unreal Engine to create cinematic sequences with a narrative structure.
-
Introduction to Interactive Media Design Course code: GED3203
Uses TouchDesigner to design generative images and real-time responses. Visual programming connects sensors, data, and sound with visual expression, forming the basis for media experiences that respond to inputs as they unfold.
-
Advanced Interactive Media Design Course code: GED3228
Develops complex generative graphics through data and physics simulations. Node-based programming is used to build large-scale particle systems and develop them into immersive content for exhibitions and performances.
-
Physical Computing & Interactive Design Course code: GED3221
Explores interaction between digital systems and the physical environment. Arduino, sensors, and actuators are connected through hardware prototyping to create systems that respond to users and changes in their surroundings.
-
Machine Learning for Interactive Content Course code: GED3226
Explores web-based machine learning as a creative tool for image, pose, and sound recognition. User behavior and environmental data become inputs for web content and media art that respond in real time.
-
UI/UX Web Design & Programming Course code: GED3219
Connects user experience design with web programming. HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are used to build responsive websites, with research, usability, and accessibility informing the design and production of a digital portfolio.
-
Web 3D UI/UX Design Course code: GED3225
Designs user experiences and interfaces in the three-dimensional space of a web browser. 3D graphics, camera control, and spatial interaction create web environments that users can actively explore and participate in.
Curriculum & collaboration
New courses can be designed and taught within these areas of expertise. Educational collaborations can adapt subjects and levels to learners and institutions, shaping curricula that connect theory, practical work, and projects.
